The eighth season's first episodes follow a "Who's the father?" format, with the father revealed to be Ross in episode two and Rachel telling him in episode three. Joey begins to develop romantic feelings for roommate Rachel and when Joey's feelings are revealed things become awkward for the two. Eventually their friendship returns to its status quo but in the finale, following Rachel's giving birth to a daughter, whom she and Ross call Emma, she accepts an accidental proposal of marriage from Joey when he bends down to retrieve a ring which has fallen from Ross' jacket. The season was regarded as a return to form for the series; its ratings increased as viewers tuned in for comfort following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. It won the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2002, the first in that category for the series.

#1	The One After 'I Do' Joey thinks Monica's pregnant, but her denial quickly shifts the focus to Phoebe, taking the heat off of Rachel. Chandler's shoes are slippery. Joey tries to impress a broadway director. Ross dances with children to impress a woman.
#2	The One with the Red Sweater Joey finds a red sweater in his apartment and realises it's the sweater of the father of Rachel's baby. Phoebe thinks it's Tag Jones' and arranges a meeting for Rachel with him. Ross and Chandler attempt to recreate the wedding pictures.
#3	The One Where Rachel Tells... Chandler and Monica prepare to leave for their honeymoon as Rachel prepares to tell the father of her baby. Phoebe and Joey try to get into Monica and Chandler's apartment.
#4	The One with the Videotape Ross and Rachel disagree over who came onto whom when they hooked up. He wants to prove it and accidentally reveals that he has the encounter on videotape. Monica and Chandler meet another couple while on their honeymoon.
#5	The One with Rachel's Date Phoebe begins dating a guy who works for Monica, causing a problem when Phoebe wants to dump him on the same day Monica plans to fire him. A guy at Chandler's work thinks that Chandler's name is Toby. Rachel goes on a date with Joey's costar, despite being pregnant.
#6	The One with the Halloween Party Monica and Chandler are throwing a Halloween Party. At the party Phoebe runs into her sister's fiance, Eric (Sean Penn). Ross and Chandler arm wrestle.
#7	The One with the Stain Chandler hires a maid to help Monica but she thinks the maid is stealing her clothes. Eric broke up with Ursula and wants to date Phoebe but she reminds him too much of her sister.
#8	The One with the Stripper Rachel's having dinner with her dad to tell him that she's pregnant. Meanwhile Monica hires a stripper, who turns out to be a hooker, for Chandler.
#9	The One with the Rumor Monica invites a high school friend, Will (Brad Pitt) to her Thanksgiving dinner. He and Ross started a rumor about Rachel having both male and female 'body parts' during their senior year of High School. Joey tries to eat an entire turkey because 'he's a Tribiani'. Chandler and Phoebe avoid work by just sitting on the couch and shouting random sentences at the T.V set.They have no idea what's going on though.
#10	The One with Monica's Boots Monica buys very expensive boots and promises Chandler to wear them all the time. After a while they are killing Monica's feet but she doesn't dare to tell it to Chandler; Chandler was right, but Monica just can't admit it.
#11	The One with Ross' Step Forward (The One with the Creepy Holiday Card) Ross freaks out when Mona wants to send out joint Christmas cards and wants to have 'the talk'. Chandler tries to get out of spending time with his boss.
#12	The One Where Joey Dates Rachel Now that Rachel can't go on dates anymore due to her pregnancy, Joey decides to take her on a date. Monica and Chandler get a Ms. Pac-Man arcade game for a wedding present. Ross is late for his classes.
#13	The One Where Chandler Takes a Bath Monica turns Chandler onto the concept of having a bath to relax. Rachel and Ross learn the baby's sex (a girl). Phoebe, Monica and Chandler find out about Joey's feelings for Rachel.
#14	The One with the Secret Closet Chandler becomes obsessed with finding out what is behind the door of Monica's secret closet. Phoebe feels betrayed when she discovers Monica has been using a different massage therapist.
#15	The One with the Birthing Video Phoebe gives a birthing video to Rachel. Monica, Rachel and Chandler freak out when they watch it. Ross struggles to tell Mona that Rachel is now living with him.
#16	The One Where Joey Tells Rachel Joey confesses his love for Rachel, but Rachel politely and lovingly turns him down. Phoebe is convinced that a British man called Don is Monica's soul mate.
#17	The One with the Tea Leaves Phoebe determines through tea leaves that she'll soon meet the man of her dreams. Rachel invents a crazy work problem to reduce the awkwardness of hanging out with Joey.
#18	The One in Massapequa (The One with the Zesty Guy) Monica writes a speech for her parent's 35th wedding anniversary. Phoebe dates Parker (Alec Baldwin), who's very enthusiastic about everything. Ross and Rachel have to pretend to be married.
#19	The One with Joey's Interview Joey prepares for an interview with Soap Opera Digest, although he's afraid of appearing stupid, so he enlists his friends to make sure things go well.
#20	The One with the Baby Shower Phoebe and Monica prepare for Rachel's baby shower and forget to invite Rachel's mother. So at the party, Sandra is being rude to Monica, so she tries everything she can to make things better. Joey auditions for a job as a game show host and Chandler and Ross help him practice. Notes: Joey's game show is called 'Bamboozled'.
#21	The One with the Cooking Class Monica's cooking skills get a bad review in The Post. After confronting the critic who wrote it, she decides to join a cooking class, with Joey in tow.
#22	The One Where Rachel is Late Joey invites Chandler to his movie's premiere but Chandler falls asleep during it. Rachel is very frustrated with the fact that she's 8 days late, which leads a bet from Monica and Phoebe.
#23	The One Where Rachel Has a Baby, Part One Ross and Rachel arrive at the hospital. Judy Geller arrives too. She gives Ross her mother's engagement ring to propose to Rachel with. Monica and Chandler decide to have a baby.
#24	The One Where Rachel Has a Baby, Part Two After 47 hours of labor, Rachel has her baby, Emma. Joey finds Ross's engagement ring. Rachel thinks he's proposing and says 'Okay'.
